Buying and selling Furniture

Buying or selling furniture? These few checks make for a smoother deal.

Most private sales go smoothly, but a little preparation protects both sides. As a seller, accurate photos and an honest description save everyone time and avoid disputes later. As a buyer, you're never obliged to buy on the spot - a genuine seller won't mind you taking a moment to check an item over properly first.

• Test any electrical or mechanical item thoroughly rather than taking the seller's word for its condition.
• Agree collection or delivery details in writing (message/email) so there's a record if anything goes wrong.
• Ask for recent, clear photos from multiple angles, and check they match the actual item, not a stock photo.
• For anything with a plug, ask to see it switched on and working before you buy.
